iPhone Testing Reveals Hazardous Substances

Independent testing facilitated by Greenpeace International revealed that the iPhone contains two types of hazardous substances -- brominated compounds and toxic phthalates. While not outlawed in mobile phones, the phthalates have been banned in toys and childcare products in Europe because of their "ability to interfere with sexual development in mammals."

According to the report from Greenpeace, other mobile phone makers have already eliminated the use of the chemicals. The brominated compounds were found in the phone's antenna, while the toxic phthalates were found in the PVC coating of the headphone cables.

Greenpeace also criticized Apple for not coordinating the recycling of the phones so that that they do not end up in landfills.
