Water Study Delivers Mixed News on Contaminants

Environmental laws put into effect in the '70s appear to have done a pretty good job of protecting coastal waters of the U.S. from contaminants, according to a study released today by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Specifically, the report, "NOAA National Status and Trends Mussel Watch Program: An Assessment of Two Decades of Contaminant Monitoring in the Nation's Coastal Zone from 1986-2005," finds decreasing trends of DDT, and PCBs.  On the flip side, the study reveals two areas of potential lingering concern: Oil-related compounds and PBDEs (flame retardants).

"We need to ensure the safety of our coastal waters for the rich resources they provide," says John H. Dunnigan, NOAA assistant administrator of the National Ocean Service. "This program shows that although our coasts are under tremendous pressure, policymakers and the public are able to work together to produce positive results."

The report is the first of its kind to present national, regional, and local findings in a format suitable for use by policymakers, scientists, resource managers, and the general public.
